Jamestown in Virginia and James River plantations
Jamestown was established as the first British city with success in the New World. Founded by the Virginia Company of London, three ships arrived with 104 men (women and children were not included in the statistics) in 1607 to seek fame and fortune.
Everyone knows the story of Pocahontas, the Indian girl, who married John Rolfe. If it were not for the help his tribe, the Powhatan, Jamestown would have been suffered the same fate as Raleigh Lost Colony. After having tried different ways to make money (which have not all), they discovered the floor of the snuff, and cultivated by local natives.
Thus, the production of the workforce Snuff fortune brought the first settlers, with the help of servants and slaves imported from West Indies. The colony struggled for many years and became the first capital of the colony of Virginia. As the colony grew and appropriate more land, the original owners, that is, the Indians, tired of being evicted from their lands and robbed the settlers who invaded their territory.
Nathaniel Bacon, a residents, took exception to the apparent lack of assistance that the government was providing to eradicate "the problem" Indian attacks. He led a group of like-minded people and burned Jamestown in rebellion during the governor's absence. ("What would you that? ") After a series of forest fires, the men are tired of rebuilding the capital and moved further inland: Williamsburg.
Today, the National Park Service manages the site as a historic monument. foundations and rebuilt a system of earthworks and ditches drainage are what remains of the colony of origin. The new digs uncovered artefacts of the period of history. The tower of the old church Memorial Church and remind the visitor of the splendor that once was Jamestown.
Higher up the river are the remains of most plantations snuff that has dominated the region. Some are open to the public for tours.
Among them, only the grounds of Sherwood Forest, the retirement home of President John Tyler, are open to visitors. Because the family still resides there, the house is private. It is one of the largest houses Timber-framed in the United States.
James River above the Berkeley Plantation, founded in 1619. This is the home of the first Thanksgiving in the colonies. Opening orders of the king, when they landed on their needs for goods, they said thank you and make time each year.
The plantation is also known for other firsts in the colonies. Tired of the drink of the day, the settlers puree distilled its own way. This would be known ever since as Bourbon.
Another novelty was the first set of taps. While McClellan's army was encamped there during the civil war after the battle Seven Days in 1862, General Daniel Butterfield I listened to "Lights" bugle calls of the other companies. He called his bugler, Oliver Wilcox Norton, and asked to play a new song. With some modifications, taps was developed and became the official call lights bugle. Confederate troops camped on the James River echo change.
Berkeley Plantation is the home of Benjamin Harrison one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and William Henry Harrison (Tippacanoe), the ninth president of the United States. Ironically he and John Tyler were from the same county, Virginia. Harrison, who lived in Indiana for many years after the Battle of Tippacanoe was considered a native son of Indiana and thus won the presidency.
In addition to the historical significance of the building grounds are equally beautiful, formal gardens with terraces of high water James. There are many more plantations along the James River, too many to see one or two days. The proximity of these gentlemen brought in Virginia cousins, the marriage of their families. No wonder the Revolutionary War and the war between the states are so traumatic for families, especially in Virginia. From the Northern colonies had no catastrophic situation.
