Therapeutic Massage Treats Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Repetitive Stress Injury in Snellville and Gwinett GA
Repetitive stress injury is a common affliction among people who do repetitive hand, arm and shoulder movements All Day. Carpal tunnel syndrome is only one form of repetitive stress injury, and is its most commonly experienced form. Usually afflicted are people who work at computers. Tennis players have also been known to suffer from this. Your carpal tunnel syndrome and other forms of repetitive stress injury can be treated by therapeutic massage in Snellville and Gwinnett GA.
Repetitive stress injury is also called collective trauma syndromes. Repetitive movements of the hands, arms and shoulders over a long period of time can cause tingling, burning, needles-and-pins sensations, numbness, pain and weakness in the arms and hands. In carpal tunnel syndrome, repetitive flexion and extension of the wrist irritates and inflames the tendons causing pressure on the meridian nerve, or sometimes its entrapment. Grip strength is lost, the muscle atrophies and pain becomes constant.
The carpal tunnel is a channel in the wrist through which nine flexor tendons and the median nerve pass. The meridian nerve supplies sensation to first three fingers of the hand and the thumb. The carpal tunnel is surrounded by the eight carpus bones and the transverse carpal ligament.
Other forms of repetitive stress injury may be caused by the impingement of other nerves. Impingement of the ulnar nerve in the ulnar canal of the wrist or in the cubital fossa of the elbow will affect the fourth and fifth finger and the palm. It will disable the ability to bring the pinky in opposition to the thumb. Impingement of the radial nerve in the shoulder or neck will affect the upper arm, elbow, forearm and back of the hand. Impingement of the brachial plexus nerves in tightened scalene muscles at the neck will also affect the arms. The scalene muscles are usually tightened by long periods of holding the head still while working before a computer.
To prevent carpal tunnel syndrome, proper posture and regular stretching is important. Regular massage will also keep the muscles supple and relaxed. Strengthening the forearm, neck, shoulder and back muscles is also paramount.
According to a study done by the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine, massage eases the pain of carpal tunnel syndrome and increases grip strength.
Sixteen patients with carpal tunnel syndrome were randomly assigned to two groups. The massage therapy group was taught self-massage techniques which the members were instructed to perform every night for four weeks. They were also given weekly massage sessions on the affected arm by a therapist. The control group did not undergo any massage.
Appropriate tests were done on the participants by physicians before and after treatment. Participants were also asked to keep logs on their pain levels on a scale of one to ten. After four weeks of treatment, the massage therapy group showed significantly decresed levels of pain, increased grip strength, less nerve compression, and lowered anxiety and depression levels.
The same researchers declare that proper therapeutic massage can relieve the symptoms of other forms of repetitive stress injury. Whatever nerve entrapment is involved, a trained massage therapist should be able to trace its location and develop the appropriate treatment strategy to relax muscle tension and release the nerve.
After massage therapy has helped heal your carpal tunnel syndrome, you may also want to buy gift cards to avail of other therapeutic massage services, including Swedish massage, hot stone massage, deep tissue massage, sports massage and pregnancy massage, in Snellville and Gwinett GA. They all feel so good that you wouldn’t want to stop at one.
